West Angelas is situated in the West Pilbara Mineral Field, approximately 110 km northwest of Newman, Western Australia. The terrain is characterised by extreme arid conditions, with annual rainfall below 300 mm and summer temperatures routinely exceeding 45°C. Water supply for dust suppression, processing, and camp operations depends entirely on managed bore-field extraction and strict recycling protocols. This hydrological constraint is a primary operational risk factor for all on-site contractors and vendors.

The operation runs 24/7 continuous mining cycles across multiple open pit benches, sustaining a heavy diesel burn rate across a fleet of ultra-class haul trucks, blast drills, and ancillary equipment. Power supply relies on dedicated diesel generation infrastructure and high-voltage distribution substations to maintain uninterrupted crushing, screening, and train-load-out operations. FIFO workforce rotations are managed through Paraburdoo and Newman airports, creating sustained demand for camp services, catering, and maintenance contractors.
Extraction Engineering and Processing Infrastructure
West Angelas processes direct-shipped ore (DSO) — high-grade hematite requiring primary crushing and screening rather than complex beneficiation. The primary crushing circuit feeds a multi-stage screening plant calibrated to lump and fines product specifications. Ore is conveyed to a train load-out facility and transported via the Robe River railway to Cape Lambert. The absence of flotation circuits reduces reagent demand but places extreme physical wear loads on crusher liners, screen media, and conveyor systems.
ESG, Value Chain and Sustainability
Rio Tinto has committed to net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050, with a 2030 interim target of 50% reduction. West Angelas is included in Rio Tinto's Pilbara-wide decarbonisation roadmap, which evaluates solar-diesel hybrid microgrids and battery energy storage to displace diesel generation. Autonomous haulage systems (AHS) already deployed across Pilbara assets reduce fuel consumption per tonne moved. ESG reporting aligns with GRI and TCFD frameworks, directly influencing vendor qualification and supply chain ESG compliance requirements.
